There are mainly three types of roads.
Recognizability increases safety
Recognizability and, thus, predictability improve safety on the road. The three types of roads are, therefore, increasingly recognizable by their lines (markings).
These markings are (will be?) gradually implemented across The Netherlands.
This way, each road type can ultimately be recognized by the lines/markings. Although the signs along the road also indicate the applicable traffic rules.
The idea behind this is that you will soon be able to see by the lines/markings everywhere in The Netherlands on what kind of road you are driving and what speed limit applies.
