Besides using turn signals or warning flashers, you can also give a sound signal with your horn (honk) or flash your high beam or low beam lights. 📣

Honking or blinking?

Which signal you use depends on the situation. You are more likely to use your horn in an acute situation, such as a cyclist unexpectedly crossing the road in front of you. If you are driving at night on a freeway and the oncoming vehicle is (accidentally) using high beam, it is wiser to warn the other driver with light signals.

Use signals only when you have to ‼️

It may go without saying, but signals should only be used to prevent unsafe situations. Making unnecessary noise or flashing your lights is not allowed.

Blue flashing, flashing or blinking lights and two-tone horn

As soon as drivers of motor vehicles of the police, fire department, emergency medical services, road inspectors of the Department of Public Works (Rijkswaterstaat) or other emergency services display blue flashing, flashing and/or blinking lights and a two-tone horn, they are priority vehicles. You must always give way to these vehicles.

  • Blue lights + horn: priority vehicle
  • Yellow or green lights: special duty vehicle

Yellow or green revolving, flashing or blinking lights

Drivers of motor vehicles that are officially authorized to perform road work, towing or hoisting work, snow and ice control or other accident assistance may use a yellow or green flashing, flashing or blinking light. This makes them more visible.

Are police, fire or ambulance vehicles used for non-emergency tasks? Then they also use a yellow or green revolving, flashing or blinking light. 👍
