If your car needs to be towed, take these conditions into account:
- A motor vehicle (or microcar) may tow a maximum of one vehicle at a time.
- There may be a maximum distance of 5 meters between the ‘tow’ and the ‘towed’.
- Both drivers must have a driver’s license.
- The tow rope may carry a red flag in the middle.
- Both vehicles may (or have to?) use hazard warning lights.
- The towed vehicle must be as light as possible, so passengers must board the vehicle in front. Isn’t there room there? Your passengers may then take a seat in the car that is being towed.
- A two-wheeled vehicle - such as a motorcycle - may not be towed. ‼️
- The vehicle being towed must have at least third party liability insurance.
Towing other car
- Fasten the tow rope.
- Turn on your hazard lights.
- Accelerate very slowly.
- Adjust your speed.
- Give a signal in time when you brake or turn.
- Stay in the right lane.
- Take wide turns.
- Maintain eye contact with the driver in the car behind you through your interior mirror.
Being towed
- Turn on your hazard lights.
- Make sure that the towing cable remains taut while driving.
- Steer and brake actively with the car in front of you.
- Maintain eye contact with the driver in the car in front of you.
- Follow the same road as the car in front of you. 💯
Note that breaking and steering is more difficult when the engine is off.
