Reference “Greatness” by David Marquet
A good leader should give intent to their subordinates instead of giving orders to them. The team members have the ability, skills, capacity, etc. to do things.
It reduces the bureaucracy and shifts the ownership from one single person (the leader) to each of the individuals in the team.
To give the control the leader still has to provide a framework. Competence and clarity are requirements. That is responsibility of the leader.
The authority moves where the information is. Developers decide when to ship software, sales closes deals, etc. Individuals in the team get involved and take ownership this way. Even though it is the counter-intuitive approach to leadership, leaders usually think they have to take control and attract followers. This approach is about giving control and creating leaders instead.
The leader then doesn’t achieve greatness on her own, but through the achievements of the individuals in the team, by creating the environment for them to do it.
