Autoweg in Dutch. Also called expressway in English.
A kind of arterial road. Also called N-weg (N-road, as in Niet-autosnelweg, meaning not expressway).
Signs G3 and G4 denote te start/end of the highway, respectively.
Only intended for vehicles that can and may drive at least 50km per hour.
Characteristics
- A single lanes, the lanes are usually not separated. When overtaking you have to take into account oncoming traffic.
- Often has at-grade intersections.
- Entry an exit lanes are usually short

- Usually there’s no emergency lane, but there are “refuge areas”
- There are places along the road where you can park, with the P sign (E4).
Merge into the highway
Merging is an Special maneuver.
Merging from a parking lot or “refuge area” is usually done in the same way as merging from a merging lane. The merge lane is separated from the main road by block markings.

Exit from the highway
Highways often also have a short exit lane, either on the left or right side. An exit lane ensures that traffic on the main road can continue unhindered.
Exit lane: do not miss it!. Every exit lane is announced three times by signage along or above the road. Signposts on the highway announce at: 900, 600, and 300 meters before.
Forbidden
- Standing still, turning, or reversing.
- Using emergency stop lanes (lay-by) other than for an emergency.
- Driving or stopping on the side of the road other than for an emergency.
