1.2 Vehicles

  • Motor vehicles (motorrijtuigen). Vehicles with an engine not on rails. Pedal assistance (bikes?) aren’t motor vehicles. Requires a liability insurance.
  • Motor vehicles (motorvoertuigen). Vehicles with an engine not on rails. Pedal assistance (bikes?) aren’t motor vehicles.
  • Passenger car (personenauto). 4-wheeled motor vehicle. Max 8 people (excluding driver). Requires license type B.
  • Motorcycle (motorfiets). 2-wheeled (might have a side care or trailer). Requires a helmet and license type A.
  • 3-wheeled motor vehicle (driewielig motorvoertuig). Can travel faster than 45kmh.
  • Company car ??? (bedrijfsauto). Business vehicle? Transports of goods, up to 3500kg
  • Truck (vrachtauto) Transports goods, more than 3500kg.
  • Trailer (aanhangwagen) a vehicle that is propelled by another vehicle
  • Moped (bromfiets) 2-wheeled, maximum speed 45kmh. Yellow license place. Requires a helmet and licenses type AM. There are 3 and 4-wheeled mopeds (not disabled vehicle).
  • Moped (snorfiets) 2-wheeled, maximum speed 25km. Blue license plate. Helmet not mandatory. Requires license type AM.
  • Moped car (brommobiel) 3 or 4-wheeled with a body. A microcar, follows the rules of motor vehicles. 45 sign in the back. Requires license type AM.
  • Disabled vehicle (gehandicaptenvoertuig) Max 1.1m wide. May have auxiliary engine. With engine max speed is 45kmh. Not a moped.
    • Might drive in the sidewalk, then must follow pedestrian rules. Max 6kmh.
  • Bus (autobus) equipped to transport more than 8 people (excluding driver).
  • Scheduled bus (lijnbus) scheduled public transport. Passenger Transport Act of 2000.
  • T-100 bus buses drive at 80kmh. T-100 buses can drive at 100kmh. With a 100 sign in the back. Follow special safety rules, no special standing places.
  • Priority vehicles (voorrangsvoertuigen) special purpose vehicle with assistance for emergency (blue lights, flashing lights, two-tone horn, siren). Ambulances, police cars, fire engines, etc. When the light and/or the siren is on must be given free passage.

Motorrijtuigen vs. Motorvoertuigen => the former is referred in the WVW of 1994. The later in RVV of 1990. The WVW is the one in force at the moment.
