3.6 Pre-sort and turn

Why do you sort ahead and how to safely turn left or right?
Pre-sorting
By pre-sorting at an intersection or exit, you make evident what direction you want to go to. In many situations you decide for yourself whether you want to pre-sort or not.
It’s important to pre-sort when:
- Doing otherwise it could lead to un unsafe situation
- Would otherwise not be able to flow through traffic
Sometimes, though, not pre-sorting is actually safer. For example, if you turn left with a trailer and have to make a wider bend.
- Right: sort ahead on the right by driving as right as possible.
- Left: pre-sort on the left by driving as left as possible, not further than the rode divider line.
#todo translate this
If you are driving on a one-way only road, it is best to sort yourself all the way to the left, except when a sign below indicates that some vehicles are exempt from this rules. Drivers of these vehicles can still meet you. (Bestuurders van deze voertuigen kunnen je dan namelijk toch tegemoetkomen, who knows what that means, I guess the can still drive in both directions and thus come at you from the front?)
Pre-sorting lane
Sometimes you are obliged to use a priority lane with an arrow point left, right, or straight ahead.
As long as the pre-sorting lane has an interrupted marking, switching is still possible. With a solid line you are no longer allowed to change lanes and you mas follow the chosen direction to continue forward. ‼️ Ie. it might be too late to sort and thus you cannot turn either.
Turning
Right
- You look in your interior mirror, forwards, in your right exterior mirror, and over your right shoulder to see if the road is clear.
- When it is safe, signal to the right.
- If necessary, sort at the front right.
- Allow traffic (including pedestrians) gong straight on the same road to pass. ‼️
- Take a short bend to the right (ie. turn right closely.)
Left
- You look in your interior mirror, forwards, in your left exterior mirror, and over your left shoulder to see if the road is clear.
- When it is safe, signal to the left.
- If possible, pre-sort to the left.
- Allow traffic (including pedestrians) gong straight on the same road to pass.
- Take a wide bend to the left (ie. turn left widely.)
5 golden rules when turning left:
- Always drive on the correct lane.
- Do you have to stop for oncoming traffic before turning? Then keep the intersection clear.
- Do you and an oncoming driver both want to turn left at an intersection? The, if there’s enough space drive past each other.
- Do you want to turn left and the oncoming driver wants to turn right? Then the oncoming driver should give you the way.
- When an intersection has a wide median, it is better to drive around each other.
