Participating in traffic sometimes requires a special action. For example, turning the car around in the middle of the road when you should’ve taken an earlier turn, or driving straight backwards when you want to make space for oncoming traffic on a narrow street. These actions, which require good and precise vehicle control, are called special maneuvers or special operations.
Any other 1.1 Road Users go first when doing a special maneuver. ‼️
Special maneuvers at a glance
There are a total of about 15 special maneuvers that are used regularly in traffic. Numbers 3 to 9 are requested specifically during the practice exam, the examiner will request two maneuvers, it is up to the student to decide when to do them. The others are part of the normal driving experience.
- Getting in/out (of where? the car? the parking spot of a house? a road?)
- Preparation (?) and control actions
- Driving backwards in a straight line
- Reversing around a bend (ie. turning but backwards)
- Parking in a perpendicular or sloping parking space
- Parallel parking
- Turning around on the road to cross it
- Turning on the road by half a turn (U turn?)
- Slope test
- Driving away (probably from a parking position)
- Changing lanes
- Inserting into the main road from a merge lane
- Entering the exit lane from the main road
- Entering the road from an exit
- Enter into an entrance from the road.
Interim test
You can take an interim test to practice for the real exam. Passing the two special maneuvers in the interim test earns an exception for the real exam. /shrug
Important tips for special maneuvers
DOs
- Chose a safe place to perform the maneuver
- Only start when you are sure it won’t interrupt other road users.
- If a road user passes by during the maneuver, pause for a moment and let them go first. Then continue.
- Perform the maneuver calmly and preferably in a flowing movement.
- Look around extra often and carefully before, during, and after executing the maneuver. Don’t forget interior and exterior mirrors. 7.3 Steering wheel, seats, and mirrors
DO NOTs
- Do not let the maneuver take longer than necessary
- In places where you are not allowed to stand still, it is also not allowed to reverse or turn.
- Sign C3 and F7 prohibit turning on the road (U turn?).
One way street and turning ban signs, both prohibit to perform a turn maneuver.
