Dutch: Voetgangersoversteekplaats (VOP) 😅

A pedestrian crossing, also know as zebra crossing, can be recognized by the white strips across the dark road surface.

Mandatory Yielding ‼️ The fundamental rule when approaching a pedestrian crosswalk is: All drivers, including tram operators, must yield to pedestrians and drivers of disabled vehicles who are crossing or about to cross.

If you’re nearing a pedestrian crosswalk and notice someone intending to cross, slow down in advance. This signals to the pedestrian your intent to yield, and alerts drivers behind you that you are preparing to stop.

Crosswalk with Pedestrian Lights

Some pedestrian crosswalks are equipped with traffic lights.

In these instances, the traffic lights override the standard traffic rules. Therefore, if you have a green light and there’s a pedestrian at the crosswalk, you are still allowed to go first.

Overtaking Not Allowed ‼️

Overtaking vehicles on either the left or right side is prohibited just before or on a pedestrian crosswalk. This prohibition also applies to tram drivers as well.

Why? This rule ensures that pedestrians crossing the street can be certain there won’t be any overtaking vehicles unexpectedly entering the crosswalk behind a driver who has yielded to them.
